The story behind the creation of the Green Banner Gang.
The Green Banner Gang (“GBG”) was born out of a need that became very clear to me, Rachel Johnson (founder of GBG), over my longer-than-usual job search as an executive leader. I realized that what got people, myself included, hired five or ten years ago just doesn’t cut it in today’s market. As weeks turned into months, I saw more and more people with the “green banner” (sweeping green #opentowork graphic around the profile picture of a LinkedIn user). So many of those people were sharing stories of frustration, desperation, loss of savings and retirement funds, evictions, and even stories of some taking their own life.
After seeming to finally “crack the code” on a variety of methods, I started getting nearly 10x more traction with my new approach including views of my LinkedIn profile by recruiters, engagement on my LinkedIn posts, connection requests, responses to job applications, and most importantly INTERVIEWS!
So, on Friday, July 11, 2025 I made a post that changed everything.
I started by saying, “I am not a professional resume writer, but I have an offer to extend.” I offered to help just one person per week with their job search. The intent was to openly share my tips and tricks and use my knowledge and experience as an executive leader, HR professional, and coach in an effort to help someone else gain the same kind of traction. Only one promise was given: “to be a sounding board, an extra set of eyes on your resume, a rational advisor, and a cheerleader.”
Almost immediately, I had an absolute flood of people in my DMs on LinkedIn requesting help – some weeks and some months into their search. Rather than turn most of those people away, I did what anyone with an ounce of skill, a dash of tenacity, and a desire to help others would do – I pivoted!
Within 24 hours I had over 30 people complete the intake form (which I had to rewrite because my ideas were flowing faster than those intake forms were arriving!)
Within 48 hours, graphics were built in Canva, a new LinkedIn group was created, an outline for a 1-hour group onboarding session was drafted, and the schedule for the first round of those sessions was penciled into my own calendar.
Less than a week later, I had over 100 people in various stages of the process and more were coming!
Exactly one week from the date of that first post, I conducted the very first onboarding group session complete with a PowerPoint presentation, handouts, and sample resume. A whopping 20 people were in attendance with another 35 scheduled for two more sessions over that night and the next day. So much for helping one person per week!
And now… *drumroll*… here is our fabulous website. Brought to you by an indefatigable spirit who thought teaching herself WordPress was a good idea. What you see here, for better or for worse, is built from scratch and straight from my brain. From the font choice to the hex codes for the shades of green, and the stock photos and layout choices. No AI. No templates. At least no one can accuse me of taking the easy route!
We are having GBG members “graduate” every week as they secure new roles and many have requested to stick around so they can help others. It is a fantastic group of people who embrace my key rule of upholding a no BS and no judgment zone.

What’s the Secret?
There is no secret. There is no “special sauce.” There is no hidden key. There is no trick. There is no panacea. And anyone who tries to charge you money for one is scamming you and relying on your confusion, or desperation, or both to get your money or your personal details.

The current job market has been flooded with tens of thousands of newly laid off individuals, many of whom are the very top talent in their respective fields. There are more people than there are jobs in some industries and everything is highly competitive. Between that and AI clipping at our heels, you either pivot or you wither.
The big question many people, including myself, have asked is, HOW. That very question is what sent me on the quest to find answers because the “spray and pray” method of applying for jobs absolutely does not work.
